Mrs. Bernardino, "LMP Teacher of the Year."

Mrs. Jane Bernardino, Department Chairperson of the Business Department at Central Falls High School recently attended the National Business Educator’s Conference in Tampa, Florida.  This proved to be a wonderful opportunity to network with business educators through out the country and discuss current trends in business education.  One workshop Mrs. Bernardino was especially excited about was offered by Dr. Tena Crews of the University of South Carolina.    The workshop titled, “Methods, Materials, and Strategies for New Teachers” was an in-depth seminar designed to acquaint new business teachers as well as veteran teachers with exciting ways to create effective learning activities that will engage their students.  A myriad of instructional materials for teaching business subjects as well as information on creative teaching methods and techniques was provided.  Jane stated, “This was an exceptional professional development activity.  I cannot wait to share this with my teachers.”

Job Shadowing/Internships:

Jane stated that the goal for internships is to get jobs for the students. Internships are no longer a required part of the curriculum.

Jane will follow up with looking into policies for internships.

She would like to set up Job Shadows for the Hotel II (Senior) students and some of the Hotel I (Junior) students. She asked for help from the advisory board members if they could arrange these for February 2, 2006 for either a half or whole day. She will check on insurance and transportation.

Portfolios:

Department of Education has set new graduation requirements for the current freshman class including graduation by exhibition

To accomplish this, one strategy Central Falls High School has chosen is portfolios.

Jane asked board members a question: As a professional in industry, what would they like to see in these portfolios if interviewing a candidate? Members to think about it and get back to Jane.

Academy Curriculum:

Need for training in customer service skills? This is required in any business environment and can be transferable between positions, especially in Hospitality & Tourism industry.

Idea brought up to have students start their own Customer Service Observation Journal where they track their own experiences and state how it feels to receive both good and bad service as a customer themselves.

Another idea to set up Mock Customer Service projects utilizing problem solving skills. Dave Bizier has a customer service workbook related to this called "Service that Sells."

Other important skills to focus on include: time management, teamwork and security. All of these must be performance based.

Discussion involving the various ratings given by AAA for hotels and how they are determined. Jane Rinkaus to follow up and bring a copy of the rating information to the next meeting.
